Room Tone

February 27 - March 20, 2021

Room tone is the sound of a space or location when no intentional sound is being introduced into that space.

It is a sonic “reading of the room” taken for filmmaking and television production. It is not the sound of an empty room. Room tone is a measurement; an audio snapshot taken with objects and subjects in position. The subjects rest where they will be when when the production begins or resumes. The sonic read of that space, with those objects, in those positions, and the reading taken from that specific point in the room, is unique. Shift the variables, you shift to another unique result.

I consider each of these works a sounding of that location, where my thought resides and ideas form and develop. They are the visual equivalent of my “room tone”.
