KARIANNE SPENS-HANNA

Detroit-based artist Karianne Spens-Hanna’s practice is driven by her interest in entropy and humanity’s interconnections to the environment. Her art examines the degradation of matter and energy and exists within a liminal space between contentment and abrupt physicality. Using judiciously restricted palettes, the human body, organic and industrial materials, and her intuitive, creative process, she pushes against social constructs and perception to develop alluringly evocative imagery and objects. She finds the city’s juxtaposition between nature and industry of interest, as it differs greatly from the rural Michigan landscape where she was raised.

Spens-Hanna graduated with honors from the College for Creative Studies, receiving a BFA specializing in painting, drawing, and sculpture. She received her M.Ed in Art Therapy at Wayne State University. Her studies around psychology, various healing modalities, anatomy, and physiology also inform her practice.
