M Contemporary Art opened in Ferndale in early 2018. The gallery primarily represents emerging and established Detroit-based artists whose work spans from painting and sculpture to photography and mixed-media. Founded by Melannie Chard, the gallery offers local and national clients access to some of the city’s most promising artistic voices.



Melannie Chard spent 10 years at Sotheby’s Auction House in New York City, working primarily in Business and Client Development. Serving as Vice President, Head of Valuations, Americas, she managed valuations, sales and relationships with some of the most notable collectors in the world.

Upon her return to Michigan, Melannie managed a significant private art collection before becoming the Director of Galerie Camille in Detroit. There, Melannie worked with private and corporate clients to incorporate art into their daily lives. She has curated numerous exhibitions in various locations that showcase the vibrant artistic talent in Detroit.

In 2018, she founded M Contemporary Art, where she provides seasoned and emerging collectors with an unparalleled client experience. She works with and nurtures both emerging and established artists based primarily in Detroit, and is committed to supporting and furthering the development of the many talented artists in the region.

In addition to curating exhibitions at the gallery, she works with clients in an advisory capacity, particularly with regard to art as an investment, drawing on her extensive knowledge of the global art market.


Gallery Manager

Emily completed her BA in French Literature & Anthropology and MA in French Translation at NYU, and spent four years working for a gallery in New York. She later studied Art History and Art Business in London at the Courtauld and Sotheby's Institutes. She speaks French and Japanese, and recently returned to Michigan after fifteen years on the East Coast, Paris, and London.
